The Chatham Islands lie about 800 km east of Christchurch (centred on a point 43°59′17″S, 176°27′13″W). Only 2 are inhabited. Chatham (about 500 souls) and Pitt (about 200).
Earliest known settlers were Moriori.
The islands became part of New Zealand in 1842.
In the 1850s other Maoris invaded and enslaved the locals, who had no concept of fighting.
Chief town is Waitangi with a population of about 200; about 500 residents elsewhere make up the total, easily the smallest of any local government territory in the country.
Its economy is largely based on fishing.
