What is Korfball?

Korfball is an exciting and creative mixed team sport combining agility, speed, technique and vision. The game involves moving and passing the ball around with the objective of scoring goals in the basket which is 3.5m of the ground with no back-board.

It is in the same family as netball and basketball and “korf” is actually the Dutch word for basket.

Each team consists of 8 players: 4 men and 4 women. The court is split into 2 halves and the team split into 2 groups of 4 in each half of the court. One group attacks in one half whilst the other defends. Everyone gets to attack and defend as after two goals the groups swap court halves and swap roles.

An attacker cannot shoot if they are being defended (criteria: same gender defending, between opposition and the post, actively marking them within arms reach and with their arm up). So it is upto the attacking division of four to create shooting opportunities, by either running past their opposition for a “running in shot” or getting sufficient distance away from their player to go for a “long shot”.
