Poneke is a Maori version of "Port Nicholson", which was for over a century the official name of what is now known as Wellington Harbour.
The name has been adopted by:
- a rugby club
- a long-established urban marae, the Ngāti Poneke, based at Thorndon Quay in Pipitea
