Wikipedia has a page called:

A province is a substantial area of a country. Some countries, such as Canada, have provinces as an official part of government. New Zealand had official provinces from about 1840 till 1876, when they were replaced by boroughs and counties.

Unofficial uses of the term appear in sport, where the provincial divisions are generally similar to the old official ones.
