New Zealand's 4 million people have been involved in recycling for many decades.

Domestic kerbside recycling (and related office recycling) is growing rapidly. Some councils provide householders with separate bins for recyclable material, some providing two or more bins for even more presorting.

22 December 2005: The Government announced that New Zealanders were recycling more waste than ever before. Anticipating a Christmas mountain of wrapping and packaging to be processed, a spokesperson said that the amount of recycled packaging material increased from an estimated 130,000 tonnes in 1994 to almost 340,000 tonnes last year.
